The Sheridan at Birmingham Sr. Housing Project has been featured in the Fall issue of EFA
The Sheridan at Birmingham, developed by the Chicago-based CA Ventures development team, provides assisted living and memory care options for seniors in Birmingham, Michigan, has been featured in the Fall issue of Environments for Aging (EFA)!
To tap into the high walkability of the Birmingham area, the 111,264-square-foot community, which opened in August 2018, was designed with an urban lifestyle aesthetic, including access to the outdoors and a modern material palette.
The 122-unit community, designed by HED (who also provided the Mechanical and Electrical engineering), includes 83 assisted living residential units housed in a four-story “U-shaped” building. The one-story memory support program, with its 39 units, is tucked in behind the assisted living building, creating an enclosed sensory garden in between for use by memory care residents.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the daily movement of the local town, either through the close proximity to the town’s community centers, or through the building’s public-facing amenities. Shared community spaces, including dining areas, art studios, community rooms, and fitness centers, are located on the perimeters of the main building to serve this integrated-use mission.
The Sheridan’s energy is socially engaging with a contemporary design that is pedestrian friendly. The design itself encourages the continuation of an active lifestyle with the number of available amenities. The aesthetic, while playing on the urban surrounding, also incorporates nature while emphasizing outdoor access. This connection to nature is made available through the inclusion of courtyards, outdoor dining options, and maximized daylighting throughout the community.
To build a comfortable environment, a blended residential and hospitality design approach was utilized by the design team. Custom materials in a double-height volume in the entryway create a similar environment to that of a hotel lobby. Clustered seating options here encourage casual conversation as wide windows and cool-toned art provoke a sense of relaxation while remaining modern.
