Fidelity Investments needed a better way to deliver flexible, customizable data center spaces quickly, and they turned to HED to execute the vision. They envisioned a new data center topology that combined the nimbleness of a modular system and the resiliency and reliability of a stick-built building.

After two years of research and development while working with fabrication shops to hone the form factor and system integration, Centercore was created — the first completely factory-built and customizable data center delivered to any site across the US in a matter of weeks.

The design needed to overcome a plethora of technical challenges. It had to be constructed in a way that sections could withstand the forces of being transported with exterior cladding, ceilings, access flooring, sprinklers, lighting and mechanical and electrical equipment before leaving the factory. Once delivered to the site, sections link and stack together resulting in a structure that operates like a traditional data center.

Centercore is flexible to meet a variety of sizes, IT capacities and system redundancies. It can be added without affecting the performance of the earlier installation. It can function with multiple cooling system options to promote energy efficiency in any location, the flexibility to partner with any mechanical or electrical equipment vendor, and the ability to completely bid construction for each new build.

The first installation for Fidelity Investments adds 500kW of IT power to an existing data center facility but is fully autonomous except for sharing the same security system.

Results
HED designed Centercore, a modular data center system, to deliver additional IT capacity anywhere in less than 6 months.
The LEED Gold modular data center combines the benefits of a traditionally built center with the advantages of a modular facility.
The system works with multiple cooling systems and can partner with any mechanical or electrical equipment vendor.
Each deployment consists of 12x14x50 foot sections delivered to the site and installed in one to two weeks.
Tier IV, fault tolerant and concurrently maintainable mechanical and electrical systems.
