In recognition of the amazing people that make our firm exceptional, we asked our team some questions about their role and what inspires them and their work.
Today, we're recognizing Darpan Arora, AIA Assoc., LEED Green Assoc., an Architect in our Detroit office.
What was the most recent project you completed with HED? What did you learn on that project?
"The most recent project I worked on was Autoliv’s Auburn Hills facility. It is also my first project at HED and it has been a very informative experience. Unlike many projects who have a streamlined design process, a project having an existing renovation commingled with new construction, like this one, is challenging. Among many other things, I learned how to progress design development, documentation of a large-scale project."
What’s your favorite part of your job? What attracted you to this role?
"Honestly, I like meetings. Especially when they are multi-disciplinary where everyone comes down on a table, where ideas flow into resolving issues, and where sheets get scribbled on. I’ve been interested in both design and technical aspects of a project. This position offers me to be a part of both."
What do you wish people outside the industry understood about your job?
"Building design is much more than drawing plans, sections and elevations, which I wish people outside the construction industry understood that. This especially applies when significant changes are requested to a project much later into its development."
What do you wish people inside the industry would understand about your job?
"There is only ONE thing I wish people inside the industry (or even outside) understood – sustainable approach to design and our responsibility towards earth. While people do understand the concept of sustainability, it is the attitude, rightful mind, or the interest to implement the concept that lacks."
What do you love about your job?
"The people around me and the office culture, in general."
What assignment or project are you most proud of? Why?
"I am proud of being actively involved in the sustainability group at HED, while also leading one/ two of the initiatives from the Detroit office. It also helps me stay tuned to sustainable design updates within the industry which hopefully I can apply to any projects I work on."
What experience (project type, location, dream client etc.) do you hope to have before your career ends?
"I hope to work on a project (any type of project) located on an island and design it as a net-zero energy project. Have you got one?"
If you could give yourself one piece of advice on your first day at HED, what would it be?
"ASK, ASK, and ASK. Every firm has set standards for a project documentation, but not all apply to many projects. Each project is different. Do not assume things while working on a project!"
