Bringing heroes home.
Illinois' first new home for veterans in over 20 years.
Small house design at a large scale.
As the first newly constructed veterans’ home in Illinois in over 20 years, the Illinois Veterans’ Home on Chicago’s northwest side is also the first such facility in the state to incorporate the federal Community Living Center (CLC) guidelines.

The strategies embodied in the CLC guidelines were embraced by the design of this 200 bed facility. HED incorporated small house design at a large scale by sub-dividing each floor into 4 distinct households. The dining program was developed as a hybrid approach, with a central kitchen and residential format kitchens in each household, incorporating both the needs of the State (the owner/operator) and the residents.

The ground floor of the facility was designed based on the "Town Center" principle of CLC guidelines. Recognizing the importance of the connection to nature for the health of all residents, each household also has balconies. The four households of the 2nd floor are reserved for Memory Care and these residents have immediate access to a secure terrace space.
