An existing enterprise data center for an international financial services corporation was having difficulty cooling its expanding IT load and was reaching both mechanical and electrical capacity. The facility had an unusual configuration, wherein three floors of servers were vertically connected by floor openings and grating, thus dispersing rather than concentrating cold air supply. The upgrade required the data center to effectively double its total power to 10MW while increasing power densities per rack from 2-3kW to 6-8kW. Due to the critical nature of the facility, it had to remain fully operational throughout construction.

HED provided master planning, architectural design, and engineering design services to reach this goal in the form of a two-story addition housing new infrastructure systems within and on the roof. An N+1 redundant generator plant, 2N multi-module UPS systems, and a 2,400-ton water-cooled chiller plant were just a few of the features used to maximize the facility's newly configured 90,000 SF computer room.

The design entailed the complex integration of architectural and engineering elements, with the siting being the immediate priority. To enable detailed phasing, cut-over conversion procedures, and minimize distribution runs, a site adjacent to the entrance was selected. This required a sensitive response compatible with the existing architectural forms and materials.
Results
The 20,000 SF expansion houses new MEP infrastructure.
Photovoltaic cells on the south elevation power the building lighting systems.
The three-level addition was built and the cut-over of mechanical and electrical systems was accomplished while the facility remained fully operational.
The addition replicated the architectural language of the original data center building.
UPS system includes 95% improved energy efficiency.
