Reimagining a former
psych unit.
A major renovation takes adaptive reuse to a new level.
Integrated design that advances women’s healthcare.
For Methodist Hospital of Southern California, HED transformed a former psychiatric unit into a welcoming, fully-functional gynecology / oncology clinic.

In partnership with patients, care providers, administration and other stakeholders, we ensured that the new clinic would fully support the well-being of those who use it. Our fully integrated design work included a feasibility study, medical planning, construction administration, artwork selection, signage consulting and fixture, furniture and equipment (FF&E) provision.

Following the completion of Phase 1 work, the new clinic houses two procedure rooms, a laboratory, administration and auxiliary offices, and utility space. A redesigned courtyard greets patients upon arrival and provides a seamless transition to the interior, where rich earth tones and unique textures combine to create a calming, visually engaging environment.

A dramatic departure from the original space, Methodist Hospital of Southern California’s new gynecology / oncology clinic not only successfully adapted a former psychiatric unit—it will also impact, enhance and advance the experience of care for thousands of women today, and in years to come.
[HED] was responsive and proactive in working closely with our facilities team and user group to deliver a beautiful clinic that was well received by the clinical staff, patients, caregivers, and facilities.”

Our team transformed an existing 3,380 square foot psychiatric unit into a warm, welcoming and fully-functional OSHPD 3 Gynecology/Oncology Clinic.
The project included accessibility improvements throughout the clinic and hospital campus.
As part of Phase 1 work, our team also installed three new HVAC units and an exhaust fan to optimize thermal comfort and air quality.
Our comprehensive design package included a feasibility study, medical planning, construction administration, artwork selection, signage consulting and fixture, furniture and equipment (FF&E) selection and provision.
The inclusion of full FF&E services enabled our team to develop a fully integrated design solution for the entire environment
Future Phase 2 activities included the conversion of an adjacent office space to further expand the new facility.
Phase 2 features four additional exam rooms that facilitate a variety of procedures and post-surgery incision management, a new nurses’ station, a conference room, an environmental services room, a dictation room, and a staff lounge.
The new gynecology / oncology clinic will impact, enhance and advance the experience of care for thousands of women today, and in years to come.
