East Addition, Firelands Regional Medical Center

Enhanced patient care.
Convenient "one-stop shop" for patients and families.
Long-term adaptability
Firelands Regional Medical Center's East addition exemplifies a dramatic and strategic realignment of the organization through an enhanced patient care environment. Supporting the hospital's strategic plan, HED combined the beds and services from two campuses into one, creating convenient "one-stop· access” for patients and families.

Designed as the new image and "front door" to the hospital, this multipurpose addition includes 82 new beds, a new state-of-the-art surgical department, comprehensive cardiovascular services, and retail and registration functions.

Shaped as a simple rectangle, the bed tower supports flexibility with a large core support area and the maximum amount of private rooms. This shape and simple structural bay system results in key benefits for long-term adaptability to changing demands, including reducing the impact of longer travel distances to private rooms. Utilizing evidence-based design solutions, such as infection reduction, promotion of family involvement and patient access to nature, the design advances new concepts of decentralized nursing care and patient rooms that adapt to acuity of care and incorporates new technologies and paperless charting.

When added together, these carefully considered elements don't only equate to a medical center that's prepared for the evolution of healthcare: they create an experience that puts the satisfaction of patients, family and staff above all else.

Results
By combining two campuses into one, HED was able to create convenient "one-stop" access for patients and families.
The bed tower develops a comprehensive cardiovascular program ranging from noninvasive testing to open heart surgery and high intensity neurovascular surgery.
The surgical floor provides twelve new surgical rooms and appropriate preparation and recovery space as well as new surgical support spaces increasing operational efficiency.
The first floor, along with the new hospital entry, includes a café, gift shop, relocated pre-surgical testing, outpatient cardiovascular services and registration. All of these services are accessed off of the “Main Street” that includes elevator access to both new and existing areas of the hospital.
The bed tower's simple rectangular shape allows the medical center to leverage its flexibility as healthcare needs continue to evolve.
