State-of-the-art digital arts and tech labs
Named after Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young, the new 40,000 SF academy for arts, technology and the business of innovation provides a state-of-the-art digital arts and media program. Conceived as an ‘incubator’, this facility’s focus on innovation and conceptual thinking drawing on the talents and influences of leaders from across a multitude of global industries.

Featuring fabrication labs, media labs, immersive and interactive learning environments, and 3D printing within a flexible studio interior, the facility design emphasizes collaboration and connectivity between programs. With unprecedented growth in technology, the facility is embedded with flexible, transparent, media-saturated learning spaces to support future generations of art media and music.

In collaboration with Frederick Fisher and Partners, HED created a welcoming facility with ‘sense of belonging’ through transparency and connectivity in order to accommodate USC’s diverse student demographic and large commuter population.

The design includes a dynamic mix of experiential learning facilities; maker spaces ranging from traditional wood and metal shops to technology-rich printing media, and electronic labs; small and large group meeting areas; long-term project; workrooms and incubator spaces; and administration and faculty work areas.
In addition to a makerspace packed with cutting-edge tools for creating prototypes from scratch, the building also features a sound-proof editing booth, a podcast studio, and a mixed reality lab.
Designed to offer graduates a space to flesh out promising ideas post-graduation, this lab resembles a startup's dream workplace. Alumni who have a product or idea in the works, but lack a creative space to think and collaborate without constraints find a home in the incubator.
As you walk through the building, you can see open spaces, glass instead of drywall, communal work stations and a basic flow that has students running into each other all the time, which will encourage spontaneous conversations and, eventually, spontaneous invention and innovation.”
