Central nerve center.
Streamlining the transit system.
The first of its kind in Texas
HED served as architect in the planning and design of a new 140,000 SF Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Light Rail Transit Vehicle Service and Inspection and system-wide facilities maintenance complex. The project was undertaken in association with Gannett Fleming Transportation Engineers. It is located on 49 acres near downtown Dallas and consisted of a rail yard for storage and cleaning of the rail vehicles and rolling stock, an 80,000 SF service and inspection building for vehicle maintenance/repair and headquarters for rail service management and operations control, and a 60,000 SF system-wide combined bus/rail facilities maintenance building for centralized control and performance of maintenance
The 80,000 SF multi-level vehicle service and inspection facility houses vehicle service and inspection shops (55,400 SF) on the 1st floor level, administrative suites, locker rooms, and lounges (12,300 SF) on the 2nd floor level, and transit operations offices with computerized central monitoring/control center (12,300 SF) on the 3rd floor level. The primary function of the 1st floor level is to provide general inspection, maintenance and servicing of engine and passenger components for catenary powered light rail vehicles.
Throughout the first level are spaces for heavy maintenance, component repair, body shops, paint booth, parts storage, running maintenance, equipment and component storage, routine service and inspection, vehicle wash system, and a vehicle cleaning platform.
The 3rd floor level operations control center serves as the “nerve center” for the entire transit system, monitoring rail and bus operations throughout the city using computerized tracking systems with sophisticated video displays.
