In a heartbeat.
Creating a contemporary model of comprehensive care.
One step at a time.
One of the world’s premier centers for comprehensive cardiovascular care, Pittsburgh’s UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute (UPMC HVI) develops revolutionary new treatment models and medical devices that can improve—and save—the lives of people facing complex heart and vascular conditions.
HED served as lead designer and planner for this project and teamed with local Architect of Record, Bostwick Design. Together, we partnered with UPMC HVI to develop two new additions that would connect public and private spaces and right-size three critical zones: intervention, holding, and office. The design strategy not only assures appropriate space for each zone, but also enhances operational performance. By streamlining organization, we reduced the number of steps healthcare providers take during each shift, expediting response times, improving efficiency and increasing time spent with patients.
Positively impacting performance, patient experience and connectivity, the new additions support UPMC HVI in delivering comprehensive care—and demonstrate that saving steps can ultimately save lives.
