Inpatient Oncology Unit, McLaren Health
Pontiac, MI
24/7 cancer care.
Exceptional cancer care for even the most vulnerable patients.
A breath of fresh air
This 19,000 SF, $14 million renovation creates the first inpatient oncology unit for Karmanos in Oakland County. The comprehensive center has 21 private patient suites including ICU and step-down rooms, triage, treatment and palliative care. An acute care center inside the oncology unit allows patients to receive care in this familiar setting instead of the emergency room for an illness, including side effects related to treatment. The unit is staffed with clinicians who specialize in critical care, trained in Karmanos-styled care at the Detroit main hospital.

To keep cancer patients healthy, patient rooms are designed with more positive pressure than a standard room. Additional fresh air is brought in from the outside to reduce the potential number of recirculating contaminants in the air. The facility also utilizes two negative pressure isolation rooms where especially sick cancer patients can go for their treatment. These spaces have an ante room that isolates any potential contaminates from entering or leaving the isolation room, creating an environment that promotes better healing and peace of mind.

21 private suites that include ICU and step-down rooms, triage, treatment and palliative care.
By including an acute care center within the oncology unit, patients are able to receive care for illnesses, including side effects related to treatment, in a familiar setting versus a crowded emergency room.
Patient rooms are designed with more positive pressure and fresh air circulation than standard rooms to reduce the potential number of recirculating contaminants in the air.
For especially sick patients, two negative pressure isolation rooms were designed, creating a safer environment that promotes better healing and peace of mind.
Opening an oncology unit brings us closer to our strategic goal of setting new standards of healthcare for the community and our patients. We are committed to providing exceptional inpatient cancer care to those requiring surgery or hospitalization for disease complications.”
