"Workspace 3.0"
Aligning work with culture and product.
Exuding the warmth and wayfinding of home
This confidential professional services firm worked with HED to implement a “Workspace 3.0” design strategy to align their physical office environment with the evolution in their work culture and product. The design adapts gracefully to swings in staffing and department sizes over time, and course corrects from a private office dominated past to a free address, collaboratively focused future.

A vertical collaboration core is the backbone of the team focused culture. The new three floor internal stair, surrounded by meeting spaces, café, training room and amenities, attracts interpersonal interactions as staff move from floor-to-floor throughout the day.

The client’s objective for a “home away from home” aesthetic was achieved with subtle color-coding of the floors to provide warmth and wayfinding. With a nod to the numerical basis of the company’s work, the design team embedded a “secret code” of patterns derived from the famous Fibonacci sequence to organize elements and add richness to common spaces. The “code” is visible in everything from the wood lobby ceiling, to the enclosure for the collaborative stair, to the veneer patterns on the 250+ assignable lockers that provide a touch point of personal space for staff becoming accustomed to their new free-address workspace.

Results
A New Internal Stairway = Vertical Collaboration Core: the design team introduced a new three floor internal connecting stair to enhance interpersonal interactions, around which meeting and collaboration spaces were organized.
Major pathways are divided by “landmarks” of support space (copy, workrooms, small meeting settings, storage, etc.) to avoid a “bowling alley” or “racetrack” feel.
Since this confidential client is a company whose business is based in numbers and spreadsheets, the HED team incorporated a “secret code” of numerical ideas into the aesthetic. From the wood lobby ceiling to the veneer patterns on the lockers, to the enclosure for the internal stair that joins all three levels, the team employed patterns derived from the famed Fibonacci squence to organize elements and add richness to common spaces.
