California’s first hospital
within a hospital.
Creating a rehabilitation hospital contained on a single floor.
Bigger on the inside.
HED partnered with Vibra Healthcare to create California’s first “hospital within a hospital,” and the only Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH) specializing in rehabilitation services in the greater San Francisco metropolis.
Vibra Kentfield Rehabilitation Hospital at St. Mary’s Medical Center was created by renovating the existing sixth floor of St. Mary’s main tower. The renovation created a new facility that includes a pharmacy, laboratory, X-ray, secondary nursing unit, and a staff lounge. The private patient rooms feature LED lighting, headwall and nurse call system, and electronic medical record and wall-mounted computers. Additionally, half of the patient rooms were adapted to accommodate dialysis treatment.
To direct patients, family members and visitors to the new “hospital within a hospital,” our team designed an intuitive wayfinding system that guides patients to the sixth floor. A receptionist in the newly renovated waiting room greets arrivals upon entry.
HED’s design of the Vibra Healthcare rehabilitation hospital creates a welcoming, accessible space conducive to healing, and advances the ways we think about space use in healthcare environments.
