Responsive urban planning that celebrates sense of place.
Joining a complex conversation.
Urban environments are complex systems comprising residents and resources; histories and geographies; communities and contexts.
As urban designers, we recognize that our first job is to listen to the client; to define the project goals; to understand the environment to which our design will respond; and to identify factors that will impact and inform our work. This approach unites each of HED’s practices. We recognize that all new buildings join an ongoing architectural and environmental conversation, and that all projects built in close proximity to existing structures require an awareness of juxtaposition, space creation, and material selection.
From sustainable landscapes to affordable housing, civic structures to school communities, we strive to reflect the architecture, values and traditions that make each urban area unique. Fostering inclusive communities. Protecting sense of place. And creating socially just, environmentally-sensitive built environments. This is how we’re working to create positive impact in urban environments. This is how we’re advancing the world.
